چکیده

Abstract Updating one’s beliefs about the causes and effects of climate change is crucial for altering attitudes behaviours. Importantly, metacognitive abilities - insight into (in)correctness beliefs- play a key role in formation polarised beliefs. We here aimed at investigated metacognition changing change. To that end, we focused on domain-general domain-specific updating prior across spectrum scepticism. also considered how science communicated form textual or visuo-textual presentations. asked two large US samples to perform perceptual decision-making task (to assess abilities. They next performed belief-updating task, where they were exposed good bad news them their updating. Lastly, completed series questionnaires probing show scepticism associated with differences as well Moreover, sensitivity influenced belief an asymmetric way: lower decreased beliefs, especially face negative evidence. Our findings highlight failures revising erroneous point adverse social effects.

Changing Minds About Climate Change: Belief Revision, Coherence, and Emotion

Scientists sometimes change their minds. A 2008 survey on the Edge Web site presented more than 100 self-reports of thinkers changing their minds about scientific and methodological issues (http://www.edge.org/q2008/q08_index.html). For example, Stephen Schneider, a Stanford biologist and climatologist, reported how new evidence in the 1970s led him to abandon his previously published belief th...

CHANGING MINDS ABOUT BELIEF REVISION Changing Minds by Reasoning About Belief Revision: A Challenge for Cognitive Systems

In this paper, we explore the representational and inferential requirements for supporting a rich notion of belief revision. Our analysis extends beyond the typical case of a single agent revising its beliefs in light of new information into the realm of social engagement. More to the point, we argue that although belief revision mechanisms surely operate at the level of single agents, we must ...

Asia's changing role in global climate change.

Asia's role in global climate change has evolved significantly from the time when the Kyoto Protocol was being negotiated. Emissions of carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas, from energy use in Asian countries now exceed those from the European Union or North America. Three of the top five emitters-China, India, and Japan, are Asian countries. Any meaningful global effort to address glob...

Changing Minds, Changing Brains

Measures of brain function are used today in many areas of psychological research, and developmental psychology is no exception. The infusion of cognitive neuroscience into psychology has been met variably with enthusiasm, skepticism, and opposition. The most productive attitude towards this sea change, I maintain, consists of a healthy dose of both enthusiasm and skepticism [see also Kagan, 20...

Changing minds in a changing world

I defend a general rule for updating beliefs that takes into account both the impact of new evidence and changes in the subject’s location. The rule combines standard conditioning with a “shifting” operation that moves the center of each doxastic possibility forward to the next point where information arrives. I show that well-known arguments for conditioning lead to this combination when cente...
